Happy St. Patrick’s Day from everyone here at Zan Fish. To help you get into the spirit of this annual Irish celebration, we’ve put together a selection of fascinating facts all about the renowned St Patrick. From the colour of Ireland actually being blue, to Irish and American relations running deep, check out these fun facts and really impress your friends over a pint of Guinness!

1. St Patrick Wasn’t Irish

Yep, you heard us right – St Patrick wasn’t originally from Ireland. In fact, his birthplace is unknown but is often claimed to be either England, Wales or Scotland. He came to Ireland only after being captured by Irish pirates, who enslaved him.

2. Green or Blue?

Although green is now the colour that’s most associated with St Patrick’s day, it was originally the colour blue that many linked to Ireland.

3. River Runs Green

Every St Patrick’s Day, the people of Chicago dye the River Kelly bright green! The dye only lasts for about five hours, so you have to be quick to spot it!

4. Shamrock Symbolism

Ever wondered why the shamrock was the symbol for St Patrick’s Day? Well, it’s said that St Patrick first used it as a symbol for the Holy Trinity, with each of the three leaves representing the father, son and the holy spirit.

5. American and Irish Relations

Did you know that it’s a decades-old tradition for the Irish Prime Minister to present the American President with a bowl of shamrocks? Well this year was no different, and yesterday Enda Kenny presented Donald Trump with one!
